I have to say it was a pretty good ride despite the rain. Folks were friendly, you got the little goody bag with long sleeve t-shirt, water bottle and some coupons. They had police and state troopers at pretty much every intersection that required you to cross the highway. Not to mention a lead vehicle escort. Felt like I was a rock star. There were also at least two active ambulances and a number of SAG vehicles (race support). The rest stop areas had appropriate food to eat, water, Gatorade and again, a nice attitude. They even seemed genuinely interested in how you were doing on the ride.On the downside, there were a couple spots of the road that were a bit rough, but not so much that I wouldn't do it again. The wind was kicking pretty good and for the first hour we had to work pretty hard. At the end of hour Mike and I had a 17.7 mph average. Then the route took us in a different direction and instead of hurting us the wind helped us. Hour number two saw us doing a 21 mph average for the hour or 19.4 mph overall. That was about the time the rain started. Learned a couple things. Don't try to draft right behind someone when the road is wet. The rooster tail from the guy in front of you will just about drown you. The rain wasn't helpful in any way that I could tell. It slowed us down and chilled us. Especially when the route turned us back into the wind again. Average for the entire ride was 18.2 mph. Not bad at all. A good experience and good fun.Trip TipsCochran, GA is a nice little town.
