"The Anvil" is one of many rock formations located at Rock CityPark. Rock City Park is located a few miles south of Olean, NewYork and is believed to be the worlds largest exposure of quartzconglomerate. It was discovered around 1890 while scouting out thearea for places to drill for oil. The area quickly became a touristattraction as the word got around that the huge, many stories highrocks were found, tucked away in the hills south of Olean. Theplace became so popular that a huge pavilion and hotel were builtnear the rock formations and several well known celebrities came tovisit, including John Phillip Sousa, who came and played music atthe pavilion. The hotel and pavilion are long gone and now, at thatlocation, sits the visitors center and gift shop with all sorts ofmemorabilia going back to the early days of this popular location.There are several trails that lead down to the bottom of the rockformations, allowing visitors to see the rocks from a differentperspective, showing just how enormous these rocks really are.Along the main trail, there are signs pointing out the unusual rockformations that have been found here, such as, Pulpit Rock,Sentinel Rock, Half Sphinx, and Anvil Rock. Anvil Rock is the onlybalanced rock in the park and has been estimated to weigh in atover 1000 tons. When viewed from certain angles, it is shaped likea huge anvil. Rock City Park does charge an entrance fee of $4.50per adult and $2.50 for children 6 to 12. The park is open from Mayto October from 9 am to 6 pm.
