Five of us set off for Sardine Creek last Saturday. The air was brisk, and the sun was shining. We had originally planned to hit the Martis Peak Lookout, but reports of storms kept us out of the higher elevations.
Anna, Kevin, and Tim wore snowshoes for the trip, and my Anna and I wore our cross-country skis. We parked and headed about a mile and a half up Old Gold Lake Rd. to our campsite. No one else was silly enough to backpack up there for the weekend, but we passed a number of snowmobiles on the trek, along with other vehicles that looked like golf carts with tank treads.
At the campsite, we found a picnic table in the sun that wasn't covered with snow, where we doffed our packs and set off to explore the surrounding lakes and streams. After an hour or two of wandering around, we headed back to camp and made some burritos.
That night, we had a brief adventure when Kevin wandered off to get find some firewood, and the dog followed him. We began to get worried when they didn't arrive back in camp promptly, but we found Kevin a short distance away trying to convince a whiny puppy to cross the creek. Kevin and I ended up with wet shoes, but that was about it.
The temperature at night fell to about 15-20 degrees, and it was a chilly night, but our 0 degree bags kept us warm in our tents. It rained and then snowed that night, and the morning was chilly enough that we high-tailed it back to Truckee at 10:30am.
Coming down Old Gold Lake Rd. was a little more difficult than going up on cross-country skis (which aren't very good for stopping or turning, and Anna and I both wiped out at a dirt patch we hit, and we got a little scraped up. But it was fun anyways, shooting down the road.
It was a great trip, but camping in the snow (this was my first time) really pushes your comfort zone.
